The Perfect Situation When a Child Needs One More Year

Transitional Kindergarten offers an elevated Pre-Kindergarten program for students who are in between traditional Pre-K and Kindergarten. During this year, the children take learning to a higher level. Many of the children leave at the end of the year beginning to sound out words and reading short sentences. They love to work with word families and write stories of their own creation. Their designs and building skills with blocks, legos, Lincoln logs and magnetic formers take on a life of their own! They begin adding and subtracting without being aware of the process that they are involved in at the time they are doing it. Science experiments are one of their favorite activities in which to partake. Art becomes more involved with color mixing, molding and creating from different resources. This is a magical year!

Lesson Examples:

Language Arts: Children are presented with a story that is out of order. They work to figure out in which order the story belongs by making sense of cause and effect and context clues.

Art: Children learn about Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” painting, then recreate their own sunflower still-life using watercolors.

Math: Children learn how to create a bar graph by tasting Skittles candy and recording which flavors are each student’s favorite.

Science: Out of a handful of items, children predict which will sink or float in water. Then, they test their hypotheses to see what actually happens!
